Governor Om Prakash Mathur Visits Mangan, Reviews Agriculture and Rural Development Initiatives

Mangan, September 8: Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur on Tuesday visited Mangan district, taking stock of road connectivity, agricultural activities, rural livelihoods and development initiatives in remote areas, including the Vibrant Village region of Dzongu.

The Governor began his visit by travelling through the Phidang Bridge route and reviewing the condition of roads in the district. He also inspected the Government Horticulture Farm, with particular attention to the Orange Farm and ongoing efforts for the revival of large cardamom cultivation.

Interacting with agriculture experts and officials, Mathur sought details about the cardamom revival programme, rainfall patterns, farming-related difficulties and challenges faced by cultivators. Appreciating the efforts of farmers and government departments, he assured support for initiatives aimed at strengthening agriculture in the region.

The Governor subsequently visited Hee- Gyathang, a remote area under the Vibrant Village programme, where a Knowledge Sharing Centre hosted a farmers’ interaction programme. He visited stalls showcasing locally produced organic products and fresh vegetables and interacted with farmers, appreciating their efforts.

Presentations were made by the Agriculture Department, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR Tadong and the Agriculture and Horticulture departments on various initiatives and Central government schemes being implemented in the area. The Governor also reviewed the progress of these schemes.

Describing Dzongu as a “paradise” with immense opportunities, Mathur encouraged local residents to recognise their potential and turn challenges into opportunities through innovation. Farmers raised concerns including shortage of manpower, human-wildlife conflict and difficulties in accessing markets.

The Governor emphasised the need for farmers to identify suitable markets for their products so that they can secure better returns.

Mathur also visited the Nettle Handloom Centre, jointly operated by Eco Stream and MLAS NGO. The centre uses nettle, a locally available plant, to produce yarn that is subsequently converted into high-quality fabrics and garments. The products, according to the press release, have demand in metropolitan markets.

The Governor appreciated the centre’s environmentally sustainable approach and described the initiative as an exemplary step towards local employment generation and self-reliance.

He also visited an Integrated Farm House operated by farmer Chhiring Ongden Lepcha, where dairy farming, fisheries, horticulture and agriculture are integrated with support from ICAR Tadong. Mathur interacted with the farmer and reviewed the functioning of the integrated farming model.

Mangan District Collector Anant Jain, ICAR Tadong Regional Centre Head Ashok Kumar, TPS Nodal Officer Dr Saurabh Shah, Dr Amit Kumar, administrative officials and heads of various departments accompanied the Governor during the visit.
