RANGPO, SEPT 11: Sikkim has begun work on a ₹120-crore Transit Hub-cum-Commercial Complex at Rangpo, setting the stage for a major redevelopment of the state’s principal gateway town and strengthening its role as a key transport and commercial link to the rest of the country.
The seven-storey facility is being developed under the Sikkim Integrated Urban Development Project (SIUDP) with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Initial site clearance, demolition and other preparatory works have commenced at the existing Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) complex ahead of the main construction phase.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Jitendra Singh Raje, IAS, accompanied by the SIUDP team, inspected the site to review the ongoing works and preparations for construction.
Officials said the inspection focused on construction quality, safety measures, timely execution and coordination between the departments and agencies involved in the project. Measures to minimise disruption to commuters, residents and businesses during construction were also reviewed.
A New Gateway for Sikkim
Rangpo, located on the Sikkim-West Bengal border, serves as one of the principal entry points into the Himalayan state. The town has seen growing pressure on its transport and urban infrastructure as the movement of passengers, goods and vehicles into Sikkim increases.
The proposed transit hub is intended to address some of those challenges by combining public transport, parking, commercial activity and passenger amenities within a single integrated complex.
The ground floor will house SNT bus operations, ticket counters, offices, passenger waiting areas and other essential public facilities.
Three floors will be dedicated to parking, with capacity for 119 cars, while the upper levels are planned to accommodate retail and commercial outlets, offices, banks, a food court, banquet facilities, an indoor sports arena and entertainment spaces.
A children’s play area is also proposed on the terrace.
The project is expected to create an organised interchange for travellers entering or leaving Sikkim, while also providing parking facilities for passengers travelling onwards to the upcoming railway station.
Railway Connectivity Adds to Rangpo’s Importance
The redevelopment comes as Rangpo’s strategic importance grows with the development of rail connectivity towards Sikkim.
The proposed hub is expected to function as an important interchange between road-based transport and the upcoming railway infrastructure, potentially allowing passengers to park vehicles and shift between different modes of transport.
For a landlocked and mountainous state where road transport remains critical, officials see the project as part of a broader effort to modernise urban infrastructure and improve the movement of people and services.
The development is also intended to make better use of scarce urban land by bringing multiple facilities together within a vertical, multi-use complex.
SNT Shifts Operations to Mining Area
The redevelopment of the existing site has been facilitated by the relocation of SNT operations from the old Rangpo complex to newly constructed premises in the Mining Area.
The Urban Development Department credited the Transport Department for coordinating the relocation, which has allowed the original site to be cleared for redevelopment.
The shift is an important enabling step for the ₹120-crore project, allowing construction activities to proceed on the existing SNT premises.
Focus on Sustainable Infrastructure
The proposed complex will incorporate a range of technology-driven and environmentally conscious features.
These include sensor-based parking, rainwater harvesting, solar panels and modern fire-safety systems.
The inclusion of such systems reflects the project’s broader objective of creating a more efficient urban facility while addressing the challenges of limited land availability and rising demand for public infrastructure.
Beyond its transport function, the government sees the complex as an urban renewal project that could bring together commerce, recreation, public services and transportation in one location.
A Strategic Investment in Sikkim’s Urban Growth
The Rangpo project is part of the state government’s wider push to develop modern and better-planned urban centres.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has emphasised the development of urban infrastructure as Sikkim seeks to cope with increasing population movement, tourism, trade and connectivity.
For Rangpo, the stakes are particularly high.
As the first major urban gateway for many visitors and businesses entering Sikkim, the town’s infrastructure has a direct bearing on the state’s wider connectivity and tourism economy.
The proposed transit hub could therefore serve a purpose beyond replacing an ageing transport facility. By integrating buses, parking, retail, offices, passenger services and recreation, the project is designed to create a new urban centre at one of Sikkim’s most strategically important locations.
With preparatory work now underway, the redevelopment marks the beginning of a significant physical transformation of Rangpo — one that could become increasingly important as road and rail connectivity reshape Sikkim’s access to the national transport network.
