Sikkim Gurung Youths to Organise Miss Gurung 2026, Cultural Workshops
GANGTOK, 28 SEPT: The Sikkim Gurung Youths is set to organise a series of programmes aimed at promoting and preserving the language, literature, culture and traditional heritage of the Gurung community, including the Miss Gurung 2026 – Miss Tamusyo competition.

The programmes will be held in different phases at Tapashree Academy, with a language and literature workshop scheduled from October 5 to 12, followed by a culture and tradition workshop from October 26 to November 4.

According to the organisers, the initiative has been conceived under the broader theme of “Hamro Maulikta” (Our Originality) and “Hamro Pahichan” (Our Identity), with an emphasis on ensuring that younger generations remain connected with their traditional knowledge and cultural practices.

Speaking about the initiative, Sarita Gurung said that preserving one's own culture and traditions is a collective responsibility, particularly at a time when younger generations are increasingly exposed to diverse cultural influences.

She said the community has a responsibility to carry forward its heritage and ensure that its language, traditions and identity are not lost. She also acknowledged the patronage of the Government of Sikkim in supporting efforts aimed at cultural preservation.

The organisers said the programme has been divided into five different components, covering language and literature, culture and traditions, dance, traditional instruments and other aspects of Gurung heritage.

Komal Gurung said the first phase, from October 5 to 12, would focus on the culture and tradition workshop, while the second phase, from October 26 to November 4, would include training and activities related to dance and other traditional practices.

A major attraction of the programme will be Miss Gurung 2026 – Miss Tamuyso, with participants in the 27–28 age group eligible to take part, according to the organisers.

The programme will also feature displays of traditional food, cultural practices and traditional musical instruments, providing participants and visitors an opportunity to learn about the community's heritage.

Bidur Gurung said the initiative was intended not merely as a competition or workshop but as a platform to reconnect the younger generation with Gurung language, culture and traditions.

The organisers have announced free registration, with a registration fee of Rs 300 for the relevant activities. The programme will culminate in the celebration of Gurung identity and cultural heritage through various presentations and displays.

The organisers said the initiative would seek to create greater awareness among young people about the importance of preserving their cultural roots while carrying the traditions forward for future generations.
