After High Court Intervention, Mangan DC Leads Inspection of Sewage Systems in Lachen and Lachung
GANGTOK, OCT 24: Following the High Court of Sikkim’s strong intervention over poor sanitation and sewage-management systems in the upper reaches of Mangan district, a key hub of Sikkim’s tourism sector, District Collector-cum-Magistrate Anant Jain on Saturday led a team of officials on a joint inspection of Lachen and Lachung to assess the ground realities of sewage disposal and identify measures to prevent untreated wastewater from entering rivers and jhoras, according to a press release issued by the District Magistrate, North Sikkim.

The inspection was conducted in compliance with the directions of the High Court of Sikkim, with a focus on examining existing sewage-disposal practices and identifying suitable measures for effective wastewater management in the two tourist destinations.

During the inspection, the team visited jhoras and checked sewage discharge points in Lachen and Lachung to assess the existing arrangements and identify gaps requiring intervention.

The District Collector suggested the construction of soak pits, also known as infiltration pits or leach pits, at hotels wherever adequate land is available. He also recommended the construction of septic tanks wherever necessary, taking into account land availability and the specific requirements of individual establishments.

The inspection aimed to identify practical solutions to sewage-disposal concerns and prevent untreated wastewater from flowing into rivers and jhoras, addressing an issue of environmental significance in the ecologically sensitive upper reaches of the district.

The Pipons of Lachen and Lachung highlighted the need to adopt appropriate sewage-disposal mechanisms in their respective areas to ensure effective wastewater management and address concerns related to sewage discharge.

The joint inspection was attended by ADM Mangan Pema Wangchen Namkarpa, ADC Dev Chungthang Hem Sagar Kafley, SDM Chungthang Arun Chettri, BDO Chungthang Johna Targain, AE RDD Joel Lama, RO Land Revenue Kessang Rikzing Lepcha, RO Forest Lachen Tenzing Bhutia, RO Forest Lachung Tenzing Wangyal Lepcha and JE PHE Sonam Zangpo Bhutia. Pipons, the Station House Officers of Lachen and Lachung, along with officials and staff of the concerned line departments, were also present.

In a separate development, the press release issued by IPR department stated that DC Mangan handed over ex-gratia assistance to the family affected by a house fire in Lachung on October 21, 2026. The assistance was provided by the district administration as immediate relief to the affected family.

The inspection comes amid heightened attention to sanitation and sewage-management practices in Lachen and Lachung, both important destinations in Sikkim’s tourism landscape, with the district administration examining possible measures to improve wastewater disposal and safeguard local water bodies.
