GYALSHING, SEPTEMBER 25: A massive landslide triggered by incessant rainfall has struck Rimbi in Yuksom subdivision of Gyalshing district, causing extensive damage to houses and property and disrupting road and power connectivity in the area.
The landslide, which originated at Singlithang, about a kilometre uphill from the affected locality, was initially triggered by heavy rainfall on August 13. Following the first incident, the district administration evacuated families living in vulnerable areas and shifted them to a relief camp.
However, continued heavy rainfall led to a major fresh slide last night, which changed course and entered the village. Officials said several houses were affected, with some completely washed away. No loss of human life has been reported so far, while the extent of damage to property and livestock is being assessed.
Secretary-cum-Relief Commissioner, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Rinzing Chewang Bhutia, who visited the affected area along with senior district officials, said the administration had acted early by evacuating residents from vulnerable locations.
Relief camps have been established and immediate assistance is being arranged for affected families. Authorities are also monitoring the situation closely and have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and avoid unnecessary movement, particularly during night hours.
Minister-cum-Area MLA Tshering T. Bhutia said the Chief Minister has been apprised of the situation and assured that the State Government would extend all necessary assistance to the affected families.
The State Government has also decided to deploy a multidisciplinary team comprising experts and officials from the Mines and Geology, Water Resources and engineering departments to assess the causes of the landslide and recommend appropriate mitigation measures once weather conditions improve.
The district administration continues to monitor the situation and assess the damage as access to the affected areas remains challenging due to the prevailing weather conditions.
