GANGTOK, OCT 7: A major push to strengthen road connectivity in Sikkim is on the cards, with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announcing the approval of ₹ 993.64 crore for the development of the NH-10 corridor between Rangpo and Ranipool.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Gadkari said the project would upgrade the important corridor into a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, incorporating tunnels, viaducts and extensive measures to address vulnerable sliding and sinking zones along the challenging Himalayan terrain.
In Sikkim, we have approved ₹ 993.64 crore for the development of NH-10 from Rangpo to Ranipool into a 2-lane highway with paved shoulders,” Gadkari stated in his social media post.
According to the Union Minister, the project has been designed to make the route safer, faster and more resilient, with a combination of tunnels, viaducts, bridges, cut-and-cover sections and comprehensive slope-protection measures.
The Rangpo-Ranipool stretch is a crucial gateway to Gangtok and serves as one of the key road links connecting Sikkim with the rest of the country. The proposed improvements are expected to address some of the major challenges posed by the region’s difficult terrain, particularly landslides, slope instability and sinking zones.
Gadkari said the upgraded corridor would also provide a boost to Sikkim’s tourism, agriculture and horticulture sectors, besides facilitating smoother movement of essential goods.
The project is also expected to have strategic significance. According to Gadkari, improved NH-10 connectivity will strengthen the movement of defence personnel and supplies, while contributing to the overall socio-economic development of the state.
The announcement comes as NH-10 continues to remain a vital lifeline for Sikkim, with the highway connecting the state’s main entry point at Rangpo to Ranipool and onward to Gangtok.
“The upgraded corridor will boost tourism, agriculture, horticulture and the movement of essential goods, while strengthening strategic connectivity for the movement of defence personnel and supplies and contributing to Sikkim’s overall socio-economic development,” Gadkari said.
The project is being presented as part of the Centre’s broader infrastructure push in the Northeast, with the focus on improving connectivity while adapting highway construction to the region’s fragile and difficult Himalayan landscape.
